We are giving Amsterdam a gift for its 750th anniversary in 2025: a new digital map of the city's religious heritage. Religious Heritage Amsterdam tells the story of all religious communities in the city in the past and present for a wide audience. Photos, films, vlogs, short stories and podcasts will take you into the world of religious communities in the city.

Discover the treasures of the city

In the coming years we are working on an interactive app and an accompanying website. The most important feature will be a map of Amsterdam showing buildings, places and objects connected to people, their religious ideas and customs throughout history. This creates a network in which the multi-religious DNA of the city of Amsterdam becomes visible.

Religious Heritage Amsterdam

Step over the threshold

For centuries, Amsterdam has been a place where people from all over the world have settled. They bring their culture, religion and rituals and change the appearance of the city. The multi-religious urban DNA can be seen everywhere. Religious Heritage Amsterdam makes it possible to enter that multicolored world and to discover the stories of all those Amsterdammers.

The urgency to connect religious heritage with current social themes of diversity and inclusion was the starting point of the collaboration

About us

Religious Heritage Amsterdam is the result of collaboration between museums and other religious and cultural heritage institutions, educational institutions and religious communities in the city. Students and researchers from various Amsterdam educational institutions, professionals and volunteers make contributions to the religious heritage map.

The initiators are Museum Our Lord in the Attic and the Faculty of Religion and Theology of the Vrije Universiteit.
